This week’s Kutuby Learning blog talks about how you can make du’a for the well-being and prosperity of your children.
Allah SWT places the parent-child relationship in extremely high regard. In the Qur’an, Allah comforts us by saying that our efforts towards raising righteous children will never go in vain. He assures us that our reward is with Him.
As Muslim parents, we are to be responsible not only for the physical well-being of our children but also for their mental, spiritual, and emotional thriving as well. They have a right over us to be given a safe environment to grow up in, healthy in all aspects.
Praying for your children is also an essential responsibility of being a Muslim parent. After all, in addition to putting our best efforts into their upbringing, we rely upon Allah s.w.t’s mercy in realising our hopes and aspirations for our kids. The importance of a parent’s du’a for their child cannot be overstated as its value is reflected in several places in the Qur’an and Sunnah.
The Messenger of Allah s.a.w. said:
ثَلَاثُ دَعَوَاتٍ مُسْتَجَابَاتٌ لَا شَكَّ فِيهِنَّ دَعْوَةُ الْمَظْلُومِ وَدَعْوَةُ الْمُسَافِرِ وَدَعْوَةُ الْوَالِدِ عَلَى وَلَدِهِ
"There are three supplications that will undoubtedly be answered: the supplication of one who is oppressed, the supplication of the traveller; and the supplication of a parent for his child."
- (Sunan At-Tirmidhi)
As Muslim parents, we want the best for our children in their academics as well as their deen.
To make that possible, we must make efforts and also make du’a to Allah SWT as everything happens through His will. To know how we can make du’a for our children, read on.

Understanding When to Make Du’a
Although we should always make du’a for our children, there are highlighted times with greater chances of acceptance.
Du’a made post prayers while you are still sitting on your prayer mat are invaluable.
Additionally, we should take advantage of moments throughout the day during our interactions with our little ones to pray for them.
For instance, when your child is being stubborn or careless, are the times that we typically lose our temper and yell at them. What if we use those opportunities to make du’a instead? Through the Qur’an, we see how various revered parents also supplicated for their children when they were faced with difficulties.
Prophet Ibrahim (رضي الله عنه) prayed for his son, Prophet Ismail (رضي الله عنه).
Prophet Yaqub (رضي الله عنه) prayed for his son, Prophet Yusuf (رضي الله عنه).
Prophet Musa’s mother placed him under Allah’s care when she sent him afloat in a basket, fearing the Pharaoh.
Prophet Luqman’s du’a for his son was so special that Allah revealed it as a Surah of the Qur’an!
And who can forget the du’a of the mother of Maryam when she asked for Allah’s protection for her daughter from the evil Shaytan.

Beware of Making a Negative Du’a While Overwhelmed
Anger can undoubtedly cause us to say things we most often regret later. In the heat of the moment when our children are being, well children, we may find ourselves saying things like, “You will be sorry for not listening to what I said!”
While we definitely do not intend for them to be hurt in any way, our du’a (yes! It does count as an invocation!) against our kids can very well turn true.
Be very mindful of making a du’a while angry against your kids, as our Prophet Mohammad PBUH has reprimanded us against this.
Jabir bin ‘Abd Allah reported the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) as saying:
“Do not invoke curse on yourselves, and do not invoke curse on your children, and do not invoke curse on your servants, and do not invoke curse on your property, lest you happen to do it at a time when Allah grants your request.”
(Abu Dawud)
Instead, we can pray that Allah SWT guides our kids to make the right decision, the one that pleases Him and that He protects them from all forms of evil and misfortune. Ameen
